"To love is nothing. To be loved is something. But to love and be loved, that’s everything."

How We Met

It’s the classic boy-meets-girl (in a bar on the upper east side) story. Both living in Manhattan at the time, a lazy spring Sunday spent in central park turned into afternoon drinks for Day and his friends at a bar they had never been too. Meanwhile, as luck (or fate) would have it, Emily’s own friends had talked her into a bit of day-drinking as well, and had ended up at the same bar.

Minutes before they met, Emily’s friend snapped this picture of her at the bar, while Day can be seen in the background. Had Joe Griffin never invaded Emily’s personal space and picked up her cider to examine it, this photo could very well have been the only evidence that Emily and Day ever crossed paths. Griff came on too strong (per usual) and Day swooped in to do damage control. The rest, as they say, is history…

The Engagement

Day planned the engagement for Stroll Weekend in December on Nantucket Island. His sister Jen (who lives on the island), played a major part in the design, selection and acquisition of the ring and was keeping it safe. As the weekend approached, both Emily and Day came down with a bad cold. After almost cancelling the trip, they set out for the island on the Friday evening ferry. Friday night came and went, as did Saturday. It seemed the colds were only getting worse and the two were in bed by 7pm on Saturday night.

When Sunday morning rolled around, Emily suggested they get an earlier ferry home. Quickly running out of time, Day proposed (pun intended) a walk out to a secluded bluff, one of his favorite spots, over-looking Nantucket Sound. There he found that the bluff was no longer the secluded spot of his youth, but a busy destination for runners and walkers of all ages. As time ticked by and Emily’s frustration grew, Day continued to make excuses to wait while people came and went. When the last family had gone, and the final jogger had finished her mid-run squats and stretches and had trotted off, leaving the coughing, sneezing duo in private, the sun broke through the clouds and glittered off the water, signaling Day to get down on one knee while Emily’s back was turned.
They caught the late boat home.
